Poem Knotwork Drawing

Lucas Tucker

Timelapse of the knotwork on a custom poem illuminated manuscript. The majority of the video is at 20x speed. The underdrawing was all done with a lead-tin stylus and the erasing is with either leather and pumice, or stale bread. The final inking is with a quill and iron gall ink.

Poem Calligraphy Timelapse

Lucas Tucker

A time lapse of the Calligraphy for a poem written by a client. 20x speed for the majority of the video. The lines are all drawn with a bronze stylus, and the drawing was completed with a lead/tin stylus based on medieval recipes. The iron gall ink is my medieval recipe, written of course with a handcut goose quill.

Here is the introductory video for simplified Bookhand calligraphy, showing how to construct the foundational strokes.

Writing a Prayer, Watch over thy Child...

Lucas Tucker

Writing with a goose quill on calfskin parchment, using my medieval scribe’s knife to hold the page in place. As always, the ink is made using medieval materials and recipes.

Drawing Lines for an Illuminated Manuscript with a Lead-Tin Stylus

Lucas Tucker

This a time lapse video showing the process of drawing lines with a lead tin stylus to prepare for writing. The line spacing is 2.5 mm for a letter height of about 1.25 mm, which is the same size as the Paris Pocket Bibles of the 13th century.
